Throwbacks bring good luck: Team marketing departments love throwback uniforms because they create more merchandise to sell. Some coaches also love the throwback uniforms because they believe they bring good luck, and coaches are a superstitious group. Count Atlanta’s Mike Smith among them. The Falcons will wear their throwback uniforms Sunday against Carolina. The Falcons started wearing throwback uniforms (red helmets, black jerseys and white pants) in 2009 and are 5-1 in those outfits. They’re scheduled to wear them again in a game Nov. 29 against New Orleans at the Georgia Dome.

With a win over Carolina on Sunday, Atlanta would tie their franchise record for the best start to a season.

Looking at history: The Falcons can tie the franchise record for best start in team history with a win against Carolina. The 1986 and 2004 teams each started 4-0, but each lost its fifth game. If the Falcons win against the Panthers, they’ll have a chance to set a team record when they play at Washington in Week 5.

Folks, youre looking at an excellent football team. For once Im not going to couch that statement. The Falcons made a few mistakes—a costly penalty here, Matt Ryans first interception of the season there—and theyre not a perfect football team. Given that no team in the NFL today approaches perfect, I dont think I care. From the first snap of the game, the Falcons dominated. They led the entire game, never really allowed the Chargers to climb back into it and made a number of eye-popping plays. They sacked Rivers, picked Rivers, shut down Rivers receivers, held Ryan Mathews in check and ran roughshod over the Chargers on the ground and through the air. The final score isnt even close to telling the story, because it felt more like the Falcons were winning 50-0 after the half.

TIGHT END MATCHUP HIGHLIGHTS SUNDAY’S GAME’s Daniel Cox has four keys to Sunday’s Week 3 matchup on the road against the San Diego Chargers

Looking to continue to answer the doubters, the Falcons follow up their win on Monday night with a long west coast trip to San Diego in a matchup of two 2-0 teams. Falcons head coach Mike Smith is 5-0 on trips to the opposite coast, and through all that experience he’s tailored a routine for his team, allowing them to stay rested and on schedule. With what could be their second road win of the early season, the Falcons would put the league on notice that once again the Falcons are contenders.

It was a tale of two halves, as the Falcons and Chiefs found themselves in a tight 20-17 contest at the half.

The Falcons dominated the second half, however, scoring 20 unanswered points to seal the game.
